List erectile dysfunction among the side effects that can challenge hepatitis C patients, according to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
In an Italian study led by Dr. Clodoveo Ferri of the University of Pisa in Italy, 414 men — half with hepatitis C, half without — were asked to complete a survey that evaluated the frequency and extent of any erectile dysfunctional problems. Among the men with hepatitis C, 39 percent had erectile dysfunction, compared with 14 percent of the men without hepatitis C. Furthermore, the authors noted in the JAMA article, erectile dysfunction was more prevalent in patients with cryoglobulinemic vasculitis than in those with chronic HCV infection.
What was not clear, the authors noted, was the cause of the increased erectile dysfunction among the HCV-positive men. While the virus itself was seen as a contributor to erectile dysfunction, the authors noted that both the use of hepatitis C therapy — alpha interferon — and the vasculitis were seen as related factors that could be the cause of some cases of erectile dysfunction.
